Days get shorter and crops are collected

Autumn is the season of fall foliage. The nature is colorful. People travel especially to Lapland to see the nature in its multiple colours. Kids go back to school after their 2,5 month summer break. Evenings get darker and the weather gets colder and rainier. Days are shorter and nights longer. People start lighting candles at home in the evenings to create a cozy atmosphere. People also like to sit outside in candlelight in the dark of the evening. In the beginning of autumn there are still mosquitoes. When the sun sets, mosquitoes come and get you.

In the autumn also the crop is harvested and threshed, berries are jellied and frozen. People pick berries from the nature and apples from their gardens and make jam. Collecting berries from the nature is everyman’s right in Finland. There are blueberries, lingonberries, cranberries, cloudberries, and anyone can pick and sell them. Same is with all mushrooms. They are collected from the forests too in the autumn. Also root crop is collected, like carrots, swede and beetroot etc. Potatoes are collected in August. In the autumn people also have crayfish parties where they eat crayfish and drink wine or shots.
